Catnip plants have a tremendous variance in the pungency of their scent. Because the essential oils are what the cats respond to, there will be a vast difference in catnip derived from different sources. Priscilla’s uses only the best, grown and processed in the Pacific Northwest.
Catnip, a member of the mint family, and its’ cousins basil, oregano and spearmint are all highly aromatic plants whose essential oils have special properties. However, catnip is the one commonly known for its intoxicating effects and as a ‘kitty aphrodisiac’, naturally stimulating to most adult cats. (Kittens from 3 to 8 months of age may be too young to react to it yet). Your cats’ response to the stimulation from catnip’s essential oils can range all the way from ‘rock and roll’ to ‘lights out’. Some cats may be hyper, some mellow, some in-between-no two cats are exactly alike. One thing is for sure-for most of them it is pure pleasure. Your cats can sniff it, eat it, lick it, and roll in it. It’s fun, completely safe and non-addictive. No amount is too much, and the effect usually wears off in about 15 to 20 minutes after exposure. It doesn’t get any better than that, at least where kitty is concerned!
As for us cat loving humans, catnip has been brewed as a popular tea by Europeans since long before Asian teas were introduced. American colonists used it for medicinal purposes as well. It has been used as an herbal remedy for indigestion, upset stomach, and other minor aches and pains. Like chamomile tea, the catnip brew has a mild calming effect on humans and is used for relaxation.
Priscilla’s has regular catnip, made of leaves and flowers, for the special felines in your life. Use it to recharge cat toys or scratchers or sprinkle where you want them to sleep. Or you can make your own toys (try sewing some catnip in an old cotton sock or other natural material). If you’re not up to that, Priscilla’s also carries a line of refillable catnip heart toys, refillable catnip pillow blankets, and pillow toys with catnip.
Tip: Open your package of Priscilla’s Catnip and pour the catnip into a clean glass jar with a tight fitting lid, then refrigerate. It will last indefinitely and maintain its pungency.
